About Mayday!

Why Mayday?

A mayday call isn’t an announcement of disaster.

It’s a warning that attention is urgently needed.

Communities rarely fail all at once. They change gradually—through decisions made in public meetings, votes cast with little notice, budgets quietly approved, and policies that shape daily life long before they become headlines.

By the time most people notice, the decision has already been made.

Mayday! exists to pay attention before that happens.

Our Mission

Mayday! is an independent publication covering the politics, government, elections, and public policy shaping Hays County, Texas.

We read the agendas.

We follow the meetings.

We examine campaign finance.

We analyze public records.

We explain not only what happened, but why it matters.

Our work is guided by a simple belief:

An informed citizenry is indispensable to a free society.

What You’ll Find Here

Mayday! publishes long-form essays, government analysis, election coverage, public record investigations, and explainers designed to make local government more understandable.

This publication is organized into Collections, not categories.

Each Collection serves a different purpose.

  • Essays — Long-form analysis and civic philosophy.

  • Field Notes — Observations from public meetings and events.

  • The Record — Public records, campaign finance, and document analysis.

  • Explainers — Evergreen guides to local government and public policy.

Together, they form a library of Hays County’s civic life. Start here if you want to dig in.

Our Editorial Philosophy

Mayday! is not affiliated with any political party, campaign, elected official, or advocacy organization.

Our allegiance is to the public record.

Every essay begins with a question.

Evidence comes before opinion.

Context matters as much as facts.

Power deserves scrutiny regardless of who holds it.

We don’t ask readers to trust our conclusions.

We show our work so readers can reach their own.

Why Subscribe?

Independent local journalism is disappearing across the country.

As newsrooms shrink, fewer people attend public meetings, read public records, or explain how local government actually works.

Democracy depends on citizens understanding the institutions that govern them.

Your subscription helps make that work possible.

Subscribers receive every new essay by email and help support independent journalism dedicated to transparency, context, and accountability in Hays County.

A Letter to the Reader

Mayday! isn’t built around elections.

It’s built around citizenship.

Campaigns end.

Governments continue.

The questions worth asking rarely disappear after Election Day.

Neither should the people asking them.

Thank you for reading.

Thank you for supporting independent local journalism.

Most of all—

Thank you for paying attention.
